During the CNY, I took my parents on a day trip near Guangzhou. Here’s how it went: Feb 21, 2026 | Xiaolan Town, Zhongshan We drove over an hour to Xiaolan—this tiny town’s only 147.29 square kilometers, with less than a million people, but guess what? In 2025, its GDP hit 61 billion yuan, blowing past the 60-billion mark! We checked out the local folk museum, a cute three-story building where the stained glass glowed under the trees. The exhibits were all about Lingnan culture and the town’s history. Turns out this place used to be Tongyin Hospital back in 1919, but it shut down during the war in 1941. After the war, they fixed it up and reopened in 1948, then in 1953 it became Xiaolan’s Maternal and Child Health Center. Nearby, there’s “Kanggong Island”—it used to be a silkworm farm, but now it’s a mini water town designed around the old saying “five pines, six roads, three water forks; one cave, twelve bridges, and plum blossoms.” There are coffee shops and light bites, and the koi in the canals were darting around like crazy. After watching the sunset at the riverside park, we hit up “Xiaolan Renjia,” a super popular restaurant in Zhongshan. The private rooms are tucked into the garden, and the main hall can fit over 50 tables at once! We ordered Zhongshan’s famous crispy roast pigeon—crunchy skin, juicy meat—plus fish soup since Xiaolan’s big on fishing. Feb 19, 2026 | Huayang Lake Wetland Park, Dongguan I grew tomatoes on my balcony—Guangzhou’s way too hot, so they only grow well in winter, and I actually picked some! We drove 30 minutes to Huayang Lake Wetland Park, which is 352.09 hectares big. The tree-lined paths there are perfect for strolling. We hung out for two hours, then planned to get Dongguan’s famous roast goose… but all the shops were closed for Spring Festival. Total bummer, we had to head home empty-handed. Feb 23, 2026 | Nanhai God Temple, Guangzhou Nanhai Temple (also called Bolo Temple or East Temple) is in Miaotou Village, Huangpu District. Built in 594 AD (Sui Dynasty), it’s over 1,400 years old—emperors used to worship the sea god Zhu Rong here! It’s 30,000+ square meters, and it’s the only well-preserved big sea temple left out of China’s four major ones. Super important for the old Maritime Silk Road, too. February in Guangzhou means kapok trees are blooming—those tall trees in the temple had bright red flowers, and they looked awesome with the Spring Festival red lanterns. So Lingnan-y! The temple has 45 stone carvings: 1 from Tang, 2 from Song, 1 from Yuan, 17 from Ming, 4 from Qing. They also re-carved 10 old ones from Song to Qing using original rubbings, plus 10 poems about the sea written by modern calligraphers. Every year starting Feb 11, they have a huge temple fair called “Nanhai God Festival” (or “Bolo Festival”). The “Five Sons Paying Homage to the King” event, flower festivals, poetry readings, and Lingnan folk shows. Feb 24, 2026 After pigging out during CNY, I made a sugar-free fruit yogurt to balance things out. Used Guangdong’s Lunar New Year staple—sugar oranges—and Yunnan blueberries that smell like flowers. Guangzhou’s Tianhuan Mall does big light displays for Christmas and Spring Festival, changing the theme every year based on the zodiac. This year it’s “Dragon Horse Spirit” (since 2026 is the Year of the Dragon). Dad loves photography, especially night shots, so I took him out to snap the lights. There were flying dragon-horse lanterns, lucky peach blossom lanterns, and even “peach blossom trees” on the 3rd-floor terrace—super lively! Hello, everyone! I am lived in Guangzhou.
