This week I headed out before dawn to photograph the incredible Dunnottar Castle on a freezing, frosty winter morning. The plan? A glorious Scottish sunrise lighting up the cliffs and castle ruins. The reality? Low cloud. Lots of it. Apparently the sun hit snooze. But as landscape photographers know, sometimes the “failed” conditions turn out to be the most interesting. Instead of golden light, we were treated to dramatic skies, moody tones, and that atmospheric Scottish vibe that makes Dunnottar look like something straight out of a fantasy film. I explored the castle from multiple angles around the cliffs, working with layers, textures, and the shifting light to make the most of the conditions. And just when I thought the morning couldn’t get any more interesting… I found a car at the bottom of the cliffs. Yes. A car. No, I didn’t drive it there. And no, I didn’t photoshop it in (though that would’ve been easier to explain). Join me for a cold, slightly chaotic, but creatively rewarding winter shoot filled with dramatic scenery, a touch of mystery, and proof that you don’t actually need a sunrise to come home with images you love.
