Come on a journey with me through the “Blue Door” near Edzell, you enter a woodland that, feels almost enchanted. The path beside the River North Esk threads in and out of dappled light, golden-beech leaves shimmering overhead, and the deeper reds and russets of maples and rowans gleaming in the mellow sunlight. Beneath you the river courses through a rugged gorge, dark rock walls rising on either side, the water rushing and churned by rapids, the amber, bronze, rust of foliage reflected in swirling copper-toned water. The leaf-carpeted path is mellow underfoot, softened by the overnight rain, the occasional crisp breeze sets the canopy shimmering like fire. The quiet is punctuated only by the water’s murmur and the occasional call of woodland birds. Through the gorge the cliff faces, boulders and rock shelves are softened by moss and lichen. The interplay of rugged geology and delicate leaf-colour makes for a richly textured scene. The light is different in the autumn sun, the shadows longer, and the glow richer. When the sun catches the golden leaves, you might feel as if you’re walking through a cathedral of light, where each step reveals another small wonder
