Continuing with the series of Messiah arias not actually written for my voice part, we have the wonderful alto aria (chorus omitted here) of hope and anticipation drawn from Isaiah. Just in case there weren't enough sixteenth notes written by Handel, I've added a few more lest we forget that the Baroque era was not a time of restraint! Certain themes lend themselves to ornaments, and praising God is absolutely one of them, though I can hear the late great Sylvia Olden Lee (the first person of color to be on the artistic staff at the MET) saying "would you please go back and praise God with all those notes?" Too often we forget that ornamentation must have meaning and not just say "look at the trick that I can do" and though there are more than a few arias where that IS the meaning, this is not one of them.
