With this recording we embark upon a three week series of arias from Part I of Handel's oratorio "Messiah," none of which are actually written for bass. This is because the bass aria in Part I is one of the dullest parts of the entire oratorio, and when you are a young aspiring bass soloist, you get a lot of Messiah Part I jobs, and everybody gets a better aria than you. The recitative "Thus saith the Lord" is fun but basses rarely get to sing the following aria; usually it is given to the alto. So this week we have the opening tenor aria taken down a third with all of its glorious coloratura intact. The accompaniment comes right out of the Watkins-Shaw edition as it was intended for performances with organ accompaniment and does a very good job of remembering what an organ can and cannot play unlike the more modern scholarly editions which throw most of the full score onto two staves and let the poor keyboardist sort it out for themselves.
