This T2-level panorama hike offers not just breathtaking views but also a touch of culture and the rustic charm of a mountain guest house. My 83-year-old mother, an avid hiker, had always wanted to visit Paxmal and spend a night at Alp Tschingla. The hike from Paxmal to Tschingla Alp takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, followed by an easy one-hour walk to Lüsis. Paxmal is a non-religious peace monument, created by the artist and pacifist Karl Bickel between 1924 and 1949. Situated high above the Walensee, with the Churfirsten mountain range as a backdrop, it’s a place that exudes tranquility and awe. To reach it, we reserved the Walenstadt Taxi for the drive up. Though the weather forecast promised sunshine with only a few clouds, mountain weather is unpredictable, and a storm soon rolled in across the lake. My mother, draped in her white rain cover, looked ghostly enough to startle the curious young cows we passed along the way. Staying at Tschingla Alp was a delightful experience, full of rustic charm. On the second day, the walk to Lüsis was a short and pleasant hour. Once there, we called the taxi again to pick us up at the Lüsis restaurant. Not many taxi companies would dare take on the adventurous road down into the valley—hats off to the driver!
