Strong storm possible off western India

A tropical disturbance has been rapidly developing along the coast near Goa in the last few hours, and is starting to pull away from land a little. ASCAT and radar are indicating rotation, but not yet a low level circulation required to designate a cyclone. Nonetheless, it now appears very likely that a cyclone will form in the Arabian Sea, and could strengthen substantially before reaching Gujarat. With models unsure overall, a landfall cannot be ruled out in the near term or later on next week as the storm may take an erratic track. Intensity projections range from tropical storm to high end Category 2 range at present. Elsewhere, other areas of interest are taking shape, including another system in the Bay of Bengal possible this weekend into early next week. The large monsoonal system could become a tropical storm before reaching Bangladesh or West Bengal. In the Eastern Pacific, an area of interest could snowball into a large tropical cyclone next week, to the south of Mexico. Land impacts are expected to be minimal.
