As residents in Valle de Oro begin assessing the damage left behind by the Lavender Fire, a GoFundMe has been started to help people in need after the blaze swept through the area. The fire started Tuesday afternoon and rapidly grew, prompting an evacuation. Damage includes at least one home and surrounding land, though the exact number of losses remains uncertain. In an effort to help neighbors affected by the fire, Tammy Wallace teamed up with Steve Stephenson to raise money and gather donations. Wallace said the impacts go beyond homes. “One gentleman said that he didn't lose his home, but he lost everything else. And I didn't question to see what everything else was. But I mean that that could be a lot of different things,” Wallace said. Wallace said many people lost pasture land, creating additional challenges for those in agriculture. “Some people, many people lost pasture lands,” Stephenson said. “Being in the agriculture field and things that, you know, unfortunately, hays scarce to come back and, you know, in this area and, you know, when you lose pasture. So I reached out to some friends and family, the local farmers and ranchers, and, you know, was able to get a couple of hay donated to kind of get people, you know, started with that.” The fundraiser is also intended to help with repairs, including the high cost of replacing wire fencing. “I want to say estimated between 15 and 20,000 miles. So, when you look at, you know, the number of miles that were repaired, I mean, it's going to take, you know, the vast resources to get that done,” Stephenson said.
