I learned to glide on the last ridge SE of Kettleman City, California, on Hwy 41. It's the last ridge on East side of Hwy 41 as you go over the top, and start heading down Hwy 41. There were several of us learning, including myself, Norman Hames, and Ron O'Quinn. Others present were Ralph Buckner, and Bill Whitmore. Bill had already learned, and I think we heard from him that they were giving lessons out of Fresno. Larry Loperena was the instructor, from Monarch Hang Gliders. The year was 1975. I found this video from 1974. The gliders, people, fights almost looked indentical! We would take a flight down the ridge for 10-15 seconds. Even after learning, we had numerous flight on the ridge behind Coalinga. Rarely, did we break 1 minute in flight. Most of it, was of course, not really knowing what we were doing. 10 years, and 4 hang gliders later, I was getting fights of 45 minutes in Coalinga. This film was created by Oxford Films. Thank you for creating, and saving the beginning of hang glider history. By the way, at 7:26 I thought I recognized Micky Dolenz, from the Monkees. I looked elsewhere on the internet, and it says he has a scar from a hang gliding accident! I also flew at Escape Country in the video. I bought my 2nd hang glider from Pacific Gull in San Clemente. They took me there so I could fly the glider I bought. I remember it was like a 500 foot hill. Does anyone know where the last hang gliding site is? It looks like Point Sal in Santa Maria. I also flew there. Update from Doug Klaussen on 03/23/2022: The film as not created by Oxford Films, the film was created by and for Free-Flight Systems, Inc., a leading manufacturer of hang gliders starting in 1972. I worked for Free-Flight back from '72-76 and watch it being filmed. Gerry Albiston was the film's producer and also the president of Free-Flight Systems and the instructor shown at the beginning of the film. The director and cameraman was Ron Underwood who later did "City Slickers" and some other films. Underwood did an earlier film entitled Go Fly A Kite for Free-Flight Systems in Super-8 format when he was a college student. I still have a copy of it. After New Freedom, he did a follow-on film called Wind Riders. Mickey Dolenz flew with us regularly, usually at our training hill in Moorepark, CA. Mickey was a good guy, very friendly, very kind to people who recognized him out at the flying site. Free-Flight Systems, Inc. went out of business about 1976 and a few years ago I spoke with Gerry Albiston and asked what became of the film. He didn't know but assumed the master print was still sitting in a vault somewhere. I suspect the film became abandoned at some point for non-payment of storage fees and ownership was transferred to Oxford Films. 1
