Phillip Sear plays a lullaby by the Moldovan composer, pianist and conductor David Fedov (1915-84). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moldova is perhaps best-known (musically) here in the UK today for its annual contributions to the Eurovision Song Contest, but it produced some significant composers, among them David Fedov ( Давид Федов 1915-84). Fedov was born in Chisinau, and was the son of a klezmer trumpeter. Fedov studied at a private conservatory in Chisinau, and made an early career as a performer of light music, and entertained the Soviet troops following their annexation of Bessarabia in 1940. After the war he enrolled at the state conservatory in Chisinau to focus on composition. He made a varied career, composing art music and also popular music and film scores (he also continued to play light music in bands). He was also a collector of Moldovan folk songs. Whatever one may think of the Soviet Union, it seemed to have provided incredible work opportunities to musicians who 'toed the party line'.
