A Meditation on Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether - Gerre Hancock (1934-2012)

Gerre Hancock was an American composer and organist who was renowned for his skills at improvisation. This piece is based on a well-known choral anthem of the same name by Harold Friedell (1905-1958). The text and tune can be found at No. 632 in The United Methodist Hymnal. Hancock’s arrangement for organ solo sets the tune two times. After a brief introduction, the first setting is simple, soloing out the melody with soft, supporting accompaniment. The second is grand, with lush harmonies and a glorious descant written above the melody. This piece is being played on the sanctuary organ (Harrison and Harrison, 2002) at Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington, NC.
