On February 27, 1827, New Orleans did something bold. After more than 60 years of bans and crackdowns, masked students poured into the streets, dancing and celebrating in defiance of the old rules. That moment is widely seen as the rebirth of Mardi Gras in New Orleans—and the beginning of the modern celebration we recognize today. But Mardi Gras in America didn’t start there. Its roots stretch back to French explorers on the Gulf Coast, a rivalry with Mobile, Alabama, and even a visiting Russian grand duke who helped shape the colors and customs we now think of as “classic” Mardi Gras. In this Today in History episode, you’ll learn: • Why New Orleans banned public Mardi Gras celebrations for more than 60 years • How French Canadian explorers named “Pointe du Mardi Gras” back in 1699 • Why Mobile, Alabama claims the first American Mardi Gras • How New Orleans used parades and krewes to bring the festival back in a big way • The role a Russian grand duke played in popularizing purple, gold, and green If you enjoy stories where culture, politics, and celebration collide, subscribe for a new Today in History video every day. 00:00 Introduction 00:02- Today in History 06:14 More Events On This Day 07:18 Quiz for This Day in History 07:40 End ▶️ Watch more Today in History Facts here! • Today in History with Mr. Louis ------------------------------------- 👉Teachers, grab the Bell Ringers for today’s topic below! 📆 https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/S... ------------------------------------- Join Mr. Louis, a History Guy, and stay tuned to gain insights into the impactful moments that shaped today into a day to remember. ------------------------------------- Why It Matters: Each of these events offers a lesson in courage, resilience, and the power of human spirit.
