Katie Risley, Region A Director for Special Olympics Illinois

Katie Risley, Region A Director for Special Olympics Illinois, joined In The Know to discuss the upcoming Polar Plunge fundraisers, including the Feb. 21 event at NIU’s Huskie Stadium and a second plunge at Lake Mendota. Participants must raise at least $100 to take part, with proceeds supporting athlete transportation, competitions, and program costs across Ogle, Lee and DeKalb counties. Risley said the three regional plunges raised nearly $200,000 last year and highlighted the strong involvement of NIU students and local volunteers. She also outlined current winter sports, upcoming state basketball competition, and spring events, emphasizing the impact Special Olympics has on athletes and families and encouraging community members to volunteer or participate.
