A winter canoe trip on the Norfolk Broads at Christmas turns into a challenge as high water levels and strong winds make wild camping increasingly difficult. I set off on a planned four-day Christmas canoe trip on the Norfolk Broads, hoping for a quiet winter paddle, good camp cooking, and a few peaceful nights of wild camping. What I found instead were unusually high water levels, very limited landing options, and conditions that became increasingly challenging as the trip unfolded. Launching from Ludham Bridge, I headed towards the North Walsham and Dilham Canal, with an initial plan to camp somewhere near Barton Broad. However, recent high water had left most of the usual spots flooded or extremely boggy, making landing difficult and wild camping far from straightforward. Eventually, I managed to find a very tight, sheltered camp — far from ideal, but workable given the conditions. With wind gusts reaching 25–30 mph and dense reed beds close by, lighting an open fire wasn’t a sensible option. Instead, I relied on my Trangia for cooking and used my Winnerwell Outlander stove to heat the lavvu. Despite the relentless wind rattling through the trees, I spent a surprisingly comfortable night — and this marked the beginning of a trip that didn’t quite go to plan.
