Jonas Savimbi, who was described by many as one of the most charismatic African rebel leaders, spent over 35 years in the bush fighting first for Angola independence and later against the Angolan government led by the MPLA. The assassination of Jonas Savimbi marks the end of the 27-year-long Angola civil war in which more than half a million people were killed. The civil war which was initiated at the height of the Cold War, set the stage for a proxy fight between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), now Russia.
