We live in a very special part of the world, so we have access to some of the most scenic snowshoeing trails in Ontario without having to leave our city limits in Sault Ste. Marie. The Voyageur Hiking Trail is a series of yet-to-be-connected sections that range from Sudbury, ON in the East to Thunder Bay, ON in the West. . In mid-January 2025 we embark on what we thought would be a simple 5-6 hour snowshoe through one of our favourite sections of the Voyageur Trail. We've had an epic year in terms of snowfall this year, so we were prepared for the quiet and stillness that only a winter forest blanketed in a fresh coat of snow can offer. The hike is roughly 14km in total, which isn't typically a challenge for us, but we did run into a few points of concern. . Firstly, the fresh and deep powder hadn't been trodden on by anyone else in several sections, meaning that we were breaking trail through 3' of loose snow pack for much of the second half of the hike. Second, there are a couple of different spots where the trail crosses a creek and in those sections, the rivers were actually open in spots. This made for a dicey crossing for both of us, but Jay actually ended up wet on more than one occasion. . Finally, the trail had been re-routed from its former route near the end of our hike, and armed with only our memories of the trail we are familiar with, and misguided confidence in our ability to navigate through unmarked trail in deep snow with no trail to follow, we had our energy quickly depleted trying to beat the coming dusk. (Spoiler alert - we make it out alive). . For lunch, we stop on the trail and cook up a fresh naan-crust pizza that was delicious! We wash it down with a tasty cafe mocha and make our way out with full bellies and happy hearts. But not before giving a few tips on what gear and clothing to bring when snowshoeing in winter, and some tips on how not to cook over a gas stove! But we do offer tasty recipes for yummy trail foods... .
