Eighty-eight-year old academician-turned-politician Prof Saifuddin Soz is one among the four senior most and the highest profile political leaders from Jammu & Kashmir-- others being former Sadr-e-Riyasat, former Governor and former Union Cabinet Minister Dr Karan Singh, four-time Chief Minister and former Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and former Chief Minister and Union Cabinet Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Following a faculty position in the State's Higher Education Department and two terms as Registrar at the University of Kashmir and Secretary J&K Board of School Education, Prof Soz joined J&K National Conference in 1980. On NC's ticket he was returned as Lok Sabha member from northern Kashmir in the interim elections of 1983 and the general elections of 1984, 1989 and 1998. He also served as a Rajya Sabha member for three terms and a Union Cabinet Minister twice. He is also author of several books on J&K's politics and culture. In 1999, Prof Soz created political history in India by going against his party National Conference's whip and thus bringing down Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government with one vote in a motion of no-confidence in the Parliament.
