https://bilinguistics.com/catalog/spe... A speech language pathologist, one of our most important roles, is supporting the communication needs of individuals with autism. In this course we talk about what autism spectrum disorder is and we consider the range of the spectrum and most importantly, that individuals with autism look very different from each other, have very different needs and have very different behavioral characteristics. We describe areas that can be challenging for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. These include understanding the perspectives of others, abstract ideas, emotions, complex language, as well as processing sensory input, completing multi-step tasks and following verbal directions. How do we help our students with autism? Our main goal is to find ways to reduce their anxiety, their confusion and their frustration. So we'll walk through successful ways to address these areas of need, will provide examples of ways to use visual supports, will break down tasks into smaller tasks, use first, then statements to simplify tasks and to motivate our students. We'll also share uses of communication systems and how we use them to help our students express themselves. We'll talk about eye contact and join attention and ways to make significant progress in gaining joint attention. And to wrap it up, we're going to talk about the importance of including students families in the intervention process. The families are the ones who are with these individuals for their lifespan, and their input is critical every step of the way. So it's really important that we involve the parents and make them an important part of this process. So let's get started.
