This level crossing is part of the passing loop which enables an hourly service to serve Barnstaple via this mostly-rural line, and had a full equipment renewal in 2019. At a glance, the road layout here seems very daft, with a 'STOP' sign and line tantalisingly close to this level crossing, and most vehicles will at least partially obstruct the crossing while awaiting a chance to emerge onto the main road. Thankfully, this level crossing is of the 'traincrew operated' type found on rural lines like this, and this means it's activated manually by train drivers in clear sight of it at a stand (via a pull-chain in the Barnstaple direction, and a pedestal at the Exeter ends of the platforms), and it can clearly be seen whether the crossing is obstructed or not. Both loud alarms are also on the same side of the road, and both are quite a bit newer than the crossing set-up here. The placement of the extra wigwag beside the electrics buildings, across the tracks from the road it serves warning to, adds a further interesting quirk to this level crossing. It is comfortably one of Devon's (and the South West's as a whole) most documented level crossings, as A LOT of footage exists from here, and you could even say there's quite an excessive amount compared to most. Not to be critical, though.
