A Stronger One is Here - Luke 11: 14-23 Lent Wk 3, Thursday 0:00 Begin 1:18 Reflection 4:10 Hymn A reflection on the Gospel of St Luke 11: 14-23 In today’s Gospel, Jesus confronts an accusation both absurd and revealing: that His power to drive out demons comes from Beelzebul, the prince of demons. His response unmasks the illogic of such thinking — a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Yet beneath the surface lies a deeper truth: wherever Christ’s authority is questioned, hearts risk closing to grace. The “finger of God” at work in Jesus signifies not mere human persuasion but divine power restoring order to creation. Evil is not overcome by argument but by holiness; not by cleverness but by communion with God. The parable of the “strong man” offers a striking image of spiritual conflict. The devil may seem armed and vigilant, yet Christ is the stronger one who disarms the oppressor and reclaims what is rightfully God’s. The battle is not evenly matched: the victory has already been won, but the field of combat remains the human heart. To be neutral is impossible — “whoever is not with me is against me.” Discipleship demands allegiance, vigilance, and fidelity. The final verses warn that deliverance without discipleship leads to danger. When the spirit returns to a swept but empty house, it brings seven companions worse than itself. Holiness cannot remain a vacuum; the heart freed by grace must be filled with the Spirit, nourished by prayer, and strengthened by the sacraments. Evil is relentless, but so too is the mercy of God. This Gospel calls the Church to constant conversion. It asks each believer to reject the subtle compromises that divide the Kingdom from within. It challenges us to live not as passive observers but as active builders of God’s reign. Christ has already bound the strong man; our task is to let His victory dwell in us — to fill the cleared spaces of our souls with His presence, His Word, and His love. Let us pray. Lord Jesus, You are the stronger one who overcomes the powers of darkness. Guard my heart from division and fear. Cleanse me of every spirit that resists Your grace, and fill me anew with Your Holy Spirit. Let my life be a dwelling where Your peace abides and Your Kingdom takes root. Teach me to stand firm in faith, to resist what is false, and to welcome Your reign with joy and courage. May Your light banish all shadows within me, that I may serve You with a single heart, now and forever. Amen. Hymn: The Stronger One Has Come Verse 1 When darkness rules the heart with fear, Your voice of truth draws near; The chains of sin are torn away, The night gives birth to day. Chorus The stronger One has come, God’s Kingdom now begun! By His hand the foe is cast, And grace shall hold us fast. Verse 2 No house divided shall remain, No heart that hides in shame; Your Spirit fills the emptied place, Restoring us by grace. Chorus The stronger One has come, God’s Kingdom now begun! By His hand the foe is cast, And grace shall hold us fast. Verse 3 Armed with truth, with love arrayed, In You we stand unafraid; The battle won, the victory sure, Your reign shall still endure. Chorus The stronger One has come, God’s Kingdom now begun! By His hand the foe is cast, And grace shall hold us fast. Bridge Sweep our hearts and make them new, Let no evil spirit through; Christ our fortress, Lord of peace, In Your strength our fears shall cease. Chorus The stronger One has come, God’s Kingdom now begun! By His hand the foe is cast, And grace shall hold us fast.
