After arguing with her overprotective mother, a rebellious teenager discovers a mysterious key that opens up a door to a magical world, a world that may offer her the escape she’s been looking for. #Fantasy #Cumbria #ShortFilm In January, we came across the Manchester Actors’ Platform MAP21 Film Challenge, in which we had 21 days to conceptualise, write, shoot, edit and upload a short film featuring a particular prop from a list of choices, with a time limit of 2 minutes & 20 seconds. We chose a key with which to base our narrative around. Our submission was well received and was nominated for ‘Best Director’ & ‘Best Use of Prop’ by a panel of industry professionals. I chose to direct this short because the last few shorts that I had made were horror stories with quite a dark tone. I felt like it was time to try something new and make something that was a bit lighter in tone and with more universal themes. Gwyneth and I are both Cumbrian born and raised artists. When coming up with a story we drew inspiration from our own experiences as young people growing up in rural Cumbria. When I was younger, Cumbria didn’t necessarily mean to me what it does now. I felt frustrated living in the middle of nowhere, I never learned to drive as a teenager and it wasn’t easy for me to go and visit friends if I wanted to, therefore, I spent a lot of time indoors. I couldn’t wait to move away, which eventually I did when I went off to university. When I lived in a city, I often felt quite homesick, I had a new found appreciation for The Lake District, for the fells, for countryside walks and days out in Keswick. I moved back home permanently in 2019 after finishing my course and I can honestly say I love it here. Some of this made its way into the script for ‘Key to the Unknown’ in the form of Zoey’s character arc. She feels frustrated living at home, she accuses her mum of never giving her any freedom. After she leaves home she’s initially full of joy and wonderment but soon begins to feel lost and scared, finding a new appreciation for home and, more importantly, for her mum. I think this is a story that a lot of young people could relate to, especially those growing up in rural areas, wishing they had more freedom. This short film is very much a piece of Cumbrian art in that we’ve used our own experiences living here to tell a story that utilises the beautiful Cumbrian outdoors.
