Empire Road was a groundbreaking British TV drama series made by the BBC in 1978–1979, written by Michael Abbensetts and filmed largely in Birmingham. It was the first British television series predominantly written, acted and directed by Black artists, and focused on the everyday lives of African-Caribbean, East Indian and South Asian residents living on a diverse street in the city. The show blended real community stories, humour, family challenges, relationships and social themes with warmth and honesty, a kind of Coronation Street of its time for inner-city multicultural Britain. It was also a launchpad for notable actors including Norman Beaton, Joseph Marcell, Rosa Roberts and early appearances by Julie Walters. In Episode 3: The Way to Walter’s Heart, attention shifts to Walter, whose personal life and relationships come into sharper focus. As romantic tensions and emotional misunderstandings surface, the episode explores vulnerability, masculinity and the quieter struggles behind everyday life on Empire Road. With its characteristic mix of humour and sincerity, this episode deepens the ensemble storytelling and continues to paint a rich, human portrait of the community and its interconnected lives.
