Making a terrarium in a natural setting beside a waterfall with native ferns and moss || Fern Terrarium While walking around the estate in the hills I came across a waterfall in the middle of the forest and decided to build a terrarium here. The next day I packed my building supplies and some mosquito repellant (the area was heavily infested as I found the previous day) and headed for the waterfall. On the way I picked up some fern and moss for the built. I also picked up a piece of deadwood from the forest floor but ended up not using it. On reaching the waterfall I set to work. I had a simple scape in mind and decided to go ahead with a rocks and fern look keeping in mind the scenery and ambience around me. I collected some small stones, washed and dried them and created a false bottom in the jar. This will hold the excess water and help to start the rain cycle inside the terrarium. At the same time it will prevent the soil from being perpetually wet and soggy which could result in root rot of plants. I placed a mesh separator and added a layer of charcoal that will help to filter toxins inside this closed ecosystem. I proceeded to add my terrarium substrate which I was also carrying in my backpack. Next I picked up a few bigger stones and created a simple hardscape post which I proceeded with planting. I used only ferns for this build and added some moss in the foreground. I also added some small stones and dried leaves for a bit of detailing. Finally I sprayed some water into the terrarium and wiped up the glass before closing it up. This was a very satisfying built in the lap of nature and will remain a favourite for me with lots of memories of this beautiful place.
