Malandanzas Del Asker (Avre Los Ojos)

Recorded on wax in Turkey circa 1912, this Ladino song by Haim Effendi is one of the oldest known recordings of Sephardic Music in the World. It provided the inspiration for the Jaffa Road recording Avre Los Ojos from there CD Where the Light Gets In. As far as we know the Jaffa Road recording is the first time the song has been recorded in 100 years. The song tells of the pain felt by parents as they watch their children go to "Asker" conscription into the army of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries.
