Most babies’ teeth start popping out when they’re about 6 to 8 months old, and those teeth usually emerge in a predictable order. Children in general will develop 20 baby teeth by the time they are 3 years old. The set includes: 4 Central Incisors (look that up!) 4 Lateral Incisors 4 Canines And 8 Molars At around 5 years of age, the shedding of the baby teeth starts in order to get the full set of adult teeth, which are 32 in total. So in what order do teeth start appearing? Typically the first ones that babies get are the Central Incisors. The lower central incisors come in around 6–10 months, while the upper central incisors come in around 8–12 months. They are meant to help babies bite and shear food into smaller pieces. The Lateral Incisors generally come out second. The upper set tends to come in slightly earlier--around 9–13 months, while the lower ones come in around 10–16 months. They don’t just help with biting and chewing, but also to develop the shape and form of the jaw and face. Combined with the Central Incisors, they also help the mouth and tongue form words. Usually, the First Molars come out next, but not always. Sometimes the Canines, pop out before them, but mostly it’s the other way around. The first lower molars emerge around 14–18 months, while the upper molars can come in anywhere from 13–19 months. Molars are used to grind and crush harder foods like seeds and whole grains. In fact, some doctors believe you shouldn’t feed babies grains until the molars come in. Then, the Cuspids aka Canines usually start coming out. The upper ones come in slightly earlier, at around 16–22 months, while the lower canines emerge around 17–23 months. Canines are sharp, pointy teeth that are used to bite and tear denser foods like steak for example. They are at the corner of the mouth, and just like the Incisors, they help chewing, speaking and shaping the face. . Finally, it’s time for the Second Molars. The lower second molars pop out at around 23–31 months, while the upper molars emerge at around 25–33 months. Both sets of molars help support the shape of the face by filling out the cheeks, as well as helping the chewing of hard and raw foods like nuts, carrots and apples. Keep in mind that every child is different and some can get their first tooth as early as birth, yes birth, or as late as 16 months old! WOW! My first two kids were always on the late side of teeth development, not getting their first one until 10 and 11 months of age. My third child was right on “track”. So as long as your baby is happy and meeting other developmental milestones, you don’t need to worry! Enjoy your little one’s emerging teeth, and all the little milestones of maturing! You got this, mama!
