It’s a massive weekend of action packed with Cheltenham festival pointers across Britain and Ireland. At Sandown the novice chasers do battle over two-and-a-half miles in the Scilly Isles chase, with Willie Mullins Kitzbuhel taking on Gordon Elliott’s Kala Conti, with Sixmilebridge flying the flag for Britain. A competitive handicap hurdle sees Red Dirt Road back to win this race for a second year running, but Olly Murphy’s Roaring Conquest and Paul Nicholls’ Henri The Second will be bang there too. Mr Vango tackles the 3m handicap chase at the end of the card but won’t get it all his own way with Fortunate Man ridden by Harry Cobden for new employer JP McManus. Musselburgh hosts it’s Cheltenham trials day and while it’s been more of a pointer towards Aintree in the past, it’s still competitive stuff with plenty of southern raiders making the trip to Edinburgh. Dan Skelton’s Kateira lines up in the Scottish County Hurdle, but previous winners Welsh Charger and Afadil have been targeted for more success. On Sunday the highlight there is the Edinburgh National, with Joe Tizzard sending a rare runner north with Rock My Way. Former winner Inis Orr bids to keep the prize at home, along with Sandy Thomson’s Grozni. Over in Ireland it’s the Dublin Racing Festival with some amazing action in store over the two days. Superstar mares Lossiemouth and Brighterdaysahead lock horns in the Irish Champion Hurdle, while Champion Chase winner Marine Nationale is out to atone for his mistake at Leopardstown the last time - will his old foe Solness get the better of him at Foxrock again? The Irish Gold Cup is one of the best staying chases staged in years, with Galopin Des Champs out to win the race for the fourth time but the 10-year-old has a battalion of challengers to face. Gaelic Warrior, Inothewayurthinkin, Affordale Fury, Fact To File, Grand National winner I Am Maximus and even the mare Spindleberry all have major hopes.
