THE FUTURE! NEXT GENERATION REMOTELY PILOTED AIRCRAFT RAF PROTECTOR RG MK.1 • GENERAL ATOMICS ASI

On the 14th March 2019, 31 Squadron disbanded at RAF Marham, becoming one of the last squadrons to operate the Tornado. The Tornado was officially retired on the 31st March 2019 but 4 years later, 31 Squadron would return to a who new, next generation of aircraft and reform to become the first to operate the Protector RG1. The Protector RG Mk 1 (MQ-9B) is the successor to Reaper (MQ-9A) which is flown by 13 Squadron, and is the next gen of remotely piloted medium-altitude, long endurance (MALE) aircraft. The Protector will be deployed in wide-ranging armed Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations where its ability to fly consistently for up to a staggering 40 hours will offer the RAF a vastly improved armed ISTAR capability. It is powered by a single Honeywell TPE331-10 Turboprop Engine and can produce 1,045 eshp (Thermo) and it is not exactly a pocket size drone. It has a length of 37.5ft (11.43m) and a of wingspan: 79ft (24m). It has a maximum take-off weight of 12,500lbs, can fly longer than my DJI Mini pro 4 at more than 30hrs and can carry 500lb Paveway IV laser-guided bombs and Brimstone 3 missiles. The Protector can be piloted way over 3,000 miles away too and operated from RAF Waddington. The Protector isn't shy of aircraft and can operate in in busy, congested airspace thanks to its ground-breaking ‘detect and avoid’ technology. Just like my DJI drone, it even has an automatic take off and landing option too, leaving a reduction in deployments compared to other remotely piloted drones like the Reaper. Now it has a pretty cool camera and other complex stuff such as the High-Definition Electro-Optical, Infra-Red (IR) camera, which, combined with endurance, provides a sensational persistent reconnaissance capability across the electro-magnetic spectrum.
