This 3-part villancico comes to us from the Cancionero Musical de Palacio by way of a copyist at the Spanish royal court during the reign of the Catholic Kings, Isabella de Castilla and Fernando de Aragon. It is an allegorical piece comparing the sorrows of an unattainable love with a dark and lonely night. The darkness as metaphor was reiterated in a later 3-part work (also anonymous) with a similar title "Si la noche haze escura" in the Cancionero de Uppsala. The MIDI file was compiled by Bojopigeon and uploaded to Musescore.com. I adjusted the text underlay in the superius part slightly and added the words for the tenor and countertenor parts. The usual villancico sequence, abba, was slightly extended with a second set of lyrics to produce the sequence, abbabba. I used Synthesizer V program with the Kevin voice bank (for all 3 parts) and the Spanish language phoneme set. The simulated sounds of gambas, lutes and harp were generated using the iPhone app Music Studio 2.0. Text: Si la noche es temerosa, (If the night is full of dread) ¿quién la dormirá? (who will bring it sleep) Que de verme lastimado (for seeing myself overcome) con fatiga y con cuidado, (with weariness and anxiety) si durmiere descansado, (were I to sleep peacefully) el sentido velará. (my senses would remain restless) Con el dolor que me dais (With the pain you give me) mi bevir mal lo tratáis. (you treat me so harshly) Si vos, mi bien, me matáis, (If you, my love, slay me) quién la vida me dará (who will give me my life?) Description of the photos: 1.
