For many years, I had planned to make it to Knoxville to see the Southern 154 operate on Three Rivers Ramblers. First two times, things came up. But third time was a charm. During the first weekend of December, I would trek down South once more to chase my final Steam Train of 2024. On the 7th & 8th, I would chase 154 over the course of the weekend as it operated, Christmas Lantern Express excursions east of Knoxville. Battling the Grades out of Knoxville, to the Three River Trestle, 154 would put on a fantastic show. Join me over the course of two Sunny late Fall days, in the south, with various locations trackside from Downtown, to the Hill & Three Rivers with Southern 154. 154 would put on a fantastic show on some of her last excursions for now. Southern 154, is a 2-8-0 G Consolidation type Steam Locomotive, built by American Locomotive Company in 1890. Making this the oldest operational steam locomotive, I have chased so far. It was built originally for the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway. In 1894, the Railway would merge with the Richmond & Danville Railway to form the Southern Railway. 154 would operate out of Knoxville for most of it's service life. It was retired in 1953, and put on Display in Chilhowee Park, in Knoxville. In 2008, it was announced the Locomotive would be restored to operation. It was returned to service in 2010, and has operated excursions on the Three Rivers Ramblers since. As the end of 2024 approaches, the #154 will be due for a 1472 day inspection. However, I am hoping to trek down to New York & Lake Erie with all the snow. I've already got some great ideas for 2025, but no idea when I will hit the road first as we are awaiting events.
