Bindii's mum was electrocuted on powerlines, but baby Bindii seems to have avoided the direct shock. Often baby bats on electrocuted mumbats survive their mum's death, being insulated by mum's fur. Also often the babies have some burns - of their mouth if they were suckling at the time; or extremity burns of their wingtips or toes which are abutting their mum's wings without the protection of fur. Bindii had a burn on her ear which was evident once I got her home. The burns usually show up around sundown, after giving the baby some fluids. Because I'm still trying to figure out a new brand of video glasses and how to get them aimed right by instinct, the footage of sorting her out and dressing her ear is pretty crappy, so I have kept some of it in and ditched the rest. It tells a the story, but that's about all. I'm getting more wins than loses now with these glasses so the footage will improve. Bindii is one of the most grippy, snaggy, clingy babies I've rescued. She seems to have very curvy claws and snags onto everything. She also has extra barbs under her claws which have a velcro effect and aids her snag effect. I don't know how she's going to go. I worry when they have overt burns so early in the piece. She's fairly alert and her eyes are bright, but adrenaline is a powerful drug and will keep her going in fight and flight mode for 24 hours or so before she will crash and the true effects of her injuries (if any) will show up. Fingers crossed for this little one. Her name comes from the extra fine shagginess of her pointy bits. Bindiis are tiny grass seeds with splinter fine spikes. They were an endemic part of my barefoot childhood. Update. 3 or 4 days after rescue, Bindii went very quiet, stopped passing urine, and died in her sleep. I think she was burnt inside and went into organ failure. RIP little girl.
