Some releases are more satisfying than others, and some releases are more successful than others; this one falls into the latter category. I rescued Prophesy a week ago after 2 previous days of attempting to get her then trying to find her when she was apparently gone. I had hoped for a great video of her soaring majestically up into the trees with her afterburners on, but she belly flopped twice. I gave her a third attempt, hoping she'd fly well, but she flew low and slow but fast enough for me to be unable to catch her before she climbed into a tree. I angsted over each movement as she tried to get higher and higher. She was looking a bit uncoordinated and wonky, but I had nothing in that Grey Thing (my new and unloved car) with which to effect a rescue. I brought my Dad to see the amazing flight of the bats as they put on the power to get into the trees, but sadly he didn't get to see the thing I really love doing. We went for a walk around the colony (I like to get Dad out in the sunshine and walking as often as possible and he likes going for walks) and when we returned to Grey Thing, I checked the tree and I couldn't see the batty anywhere, which means she flew somewhere (or I was just missing seeing her in the tree canopy). A nearby MOP who brought his old dog for a bit of sunshine in the park, who had watched me look for the bat in the tree when she first climbed there, said he saw her climb to the top of the canopy and fly off. He thinks she flew well, but that just means she was high enough to fly level to the colony trees. Maybe she just needed to loosen the kinks after a week stuffing her face in care, or maybe she was just getting to safety in the colony but can't fly well enough to feed herself; I'll get the colony checkers to look out for her on the ground, and let the rangers know. So an unmitigated success this wasn't; an unsuccessful release, maybe. Certainly it wasn't ideal in any way, but a failure? I don't know; the jury is out on this one. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. [email protected]
