Pump - raises, transfers, delivers or compresses fluids In refinery plants: centrifugal pumps are in service to transport various hydrocarbon liquids like crude oil/ fuel Products (PETROL, DIESEL, LPG, KEROSENE), Naphtha, etc, chemicals like HCL, H₂SO₄, Caustic, etc, Utilities like cooling water, hot water, condensate, etc. At specified flow rate & pressure In petrochemical plants centrifugal pumps are used for transporting various hydrocarbon liquids like Ethylene, Propylene, Butane, Isopentane, Hexane, Ethylene Glycol, etc. , chemicals like HCL, H₂SO₄, Caustic, etc, Utilities like cooling water, hot water, condensate, etc. At specified flow rate & pressure. Centrifugal pumps handling oil and gas ( hydrocarbons )must often conform to the American Petroleum Institute (API) 610 standard. API 610 specifies requirements for centrifugal pumps, for use in petroleum, petrochemical, and gas industry process services. This international standard is applicable to overhung pumps, between-bearings pumps and vertically suspended pumps Double suction between bearing Centrifugal pumps. Within the API 610 Centrifugal Pump Standard, there are various configuration codes for different types of centrifugal pumps, for overhung OH, for Between-bearings BB, and for Vertically Suspended VS is used. Centrifugal pumps also classified based on the manner in which fluid flows through the pump. Which is determined by the design of the pump casing and the impeller. The three types of flow through a centrifugal pump are radial flow, axial flow, and mixed flow. Here I have discussed types of centrifugal pump, features of centrifugal pumps, In a refinery & petrochemicals complex, thousands of Centrifugal pumps are used. Most of the pumps used are centrifugal overhung single stage pumps. Between bearing Axial split BB1 Centrifugal pumps normally in cooling water circulation service with a cooling tower, Between bearing Multistage axial split BB3 radial split BB4 Centrifugal pumps in Boiler feed water service, High speed vertical inline pump in hot condensate service, Centrifugal Seal-less pump, canned pump, mag drive pump used for pumping toxic, hazardous liquid. Impeller and the volute, are two main components of a centrifugal pump. Impeller produces liquid velocity and the volute forces the liquid to discharge from the pump, converting velocity into the pressure. This is achieved by offsetting the impeller in the volute ( dia.change) and by maintaining a close clearance between the impeller and the volute. Pumps, Compressors, Turbines ..the number of impellers determines the number of stages of the Pumps, Compressors, Turbines.. A single stage has one impeller only and is best for low head service. A two-stage has two impellers in series for medium head service. A multi-stage has three or more impellers in series for high head service. Detailed discussion on parts of the centrifugal pump, Operating parameter, Capacity control, etc. are discussed in Part 2 & Part 3 on the centrifugal pump. CF Pumps - Two/ three ..pumps in series is like multi stage pumps , develop higher dis pressure CF Pumps - Two/ three ..pumps in Parallel for higher flow. like numbers of Cooling water circulation pumps running in Parallel to meet high flow requirement.
