Lifx/Lifx+ vs. Philips Hue - Who get's my $$$? - Smart Home LED Lights Comparison

I’ll say this, this comparison between the Lifx/Lifx+ vs. Philips Hue for smart home lighting is equivalent to a Mayweather/McGregor money fight in the smart home lighting world. Both of these bulbs are highly rated from my perspective and I’ve used both extensively in my own home. The Lifx bulbs are quite bright and SEEM REALLY expensive. Philips Hue is basically the king of the smart home lighting realm but you still have to deal with a base station and you don’t get to interact with your Hue lights as much as you do with the Lifx bulbs. For this comparison, I’ve given the regular Lifx bulbs a score of 4 Eh’s out of 5, the Lifx+ a score of 4.7 Eh’s out of 5 and the Philips Hue a score of 4.6 Eh’s out of 5. Installing the bulbs in your home is as easy as plugging in the bulbs and the base station for the Hue and just the bulbs for the Lifx. One of the biggest differences between the two sets of bulbs is the lack of basestation for the Lifx bulbs. The Philips Hue smart bridge is something you have to install directly into your router. Now this isn’t a problem for me because I’ve got a router with a free port but others might have a router that’s installed in a hard to reach place so trying to install the Hue bridge is going to be tougher. Both sets of lights are dimmable and allow you to choose whatever color of light that you want. When it comes to brightness, the LIfx bulbs are the clear winners. The Lifx bulbs product 1100lumens which is almost 70% higher than the Philips Hue bulbs. From my perspective, this difference in brightness is going to be a differentiator for some people looking for smart lights in their home offices. I love how bright my work area is with the Lifx bulbs. The last thing I’ll talk about when it come to design is the improved weather resistance that the Lifx+ bulb has. The LIfx+ can be used outside as long as the bulb isn’t exposed directly to water. This is going to be handy for people running a IR camera that’s pointed outside. When it comes to functionality, each set of bulbs has a unique set of features that set it apart. Both the apps are easy to use and I didn’t have any issues with either from a control perspective. I do have to give the hat tip to the Lifx app because it has effects which is a step above your normal Philips Hue scenes. The Music Visualizer effect is by far my favourite effect so if you like entertaining or listening to music, you’re going to love how the lights change according to the beats of the music. And if you’re into it, you can throw in the strobe ever once in a while. I didn’t have any issues with connectivity of either set of bulbs. Every once in a while the bulbs wouldn’t all change at the same time you either you apply the preset again or manually change that single bulb. In terms of compatibility, the Philips Hue works with every platform out there and it’s API has been used in other apps which is neat. Lifx doesn’t work with Apple Home or Wink. Now this isn’t going to be a big deal if you’re not using Apple Home or Wink. If I wasn’t reviewing smart home products, I wouldn’t even consider the Lifx bulbs because I can’t use Apple Home to control them. I personally wouldn’t get a full set of Lifx+ bulbs because the standout features for the Lifx+ is the IR LED’s and improved weather resistance. The average room in the home isn’t going to need those features. Get the Lifx+ as a standalone bulb to supplement your regular Lifx bulbs. However, if I was looking at getting smart home lights for my office area, I probably only need the custom-white bulbs that Philips has. This is where the price difference is appalling because a full set of White Ambiance is only going to cost $369 dollars compared to your $589 again. In this situation, the question you have to ask: Is the extra 70% of brightness worth the extra $220 dollars? So be careful when you’re getting your light bulbs as it will get expensive quickly. I’m personally still recovering from the sticker shock of going from incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs so these $50 dollar smart home LED bulbs are frankly, insane to me in terms of price.
