Lifx and Lifx+ Review - Epic dance party lights? - Smart Home LED Lights

These Lifx light bulbs are pretty great. They are some of my favourite bulbs out of the gaggle of smart light bulbs that I’ve used over the last few months. The standout features of the Lifx bulbs is the app, the night vision helper on the Lifx+ and the lack of basestation. The downsides include poor remote access and the cost of the bulbs. For my Lifx and Lifx+ Review, I’ve given the regular bulbs a score of 4.3 Eh’s out of 5 and the Lifx+ a score of 4.7 Eh’s out of 5. On average, these bulbs score better than Philips Hue bulbs with the LIfx+ scoring higher than the Color Hue Ambiance. The only way I can describe is that the bulbs are flatter but taller than your average smart home light bulb. None of this really matters when you’ve got them installed in your lamps or pot lights. The bulbs are dimmable, can be set to whatever color you want quite easily and are the brightest smart home light bulb we have reviewed so far at 1100 lumens. The color of the bulbs are quite consistent so that should belay some people’s concerns. The extra brightness, coupled with a cool color setting is PERFECT for my home office/filming studio/basement. I spend the last hours of my waking hours in my basement doing mobility work because I’m old but I’ll set the lights to a warm color. When I start my day, the first thing I’ll do is goto my office and change the light settings. That 8000k light setting just sets my mind right for work. The Lifx app is quite nice. I would put it on the same level as the Philips hue in terms of ease of use but Lifx has added a few more settings that make the bulbs a little more attractive than the Hue. The standout feature is one I’ve already showed you, the lights changing according to sound so it’s great for an area where you entertain people. If you plan on spending some serious cash on smart home lighting, consider adding a Nanoleaf Aurora to your set of Lifx bulbs. For connectivity, the Lifx bulbs do not require a base station which is nice though a base-station isn’t terrible to deal with. Lifx bulbs cannot be accessed remotely through their app so if you need that feature, you’ll need to integrate the bulbs with Alexa or other automation apps. I will add that there are MANY Lifx bulb automations to be used on IFTTT. I personally didn’t come across many instances where the bulbs would not connect. I think I noticed two instances where the colours of the bulbs didn’t match but a quick adjustment in color settings fixed that isse. The biggest difference between the regular Lifx bulb and Lifx+ is the IR lighting and slightly improved weather resistance. On Lifx’s website, the Lifx+ can be used in the bathroom or outside where there is no direct exposure to water. These extra feature are quite handy especially if you’re pairing the Lifx+ with a Nest Cam Indoor, Cam IQ, D-Link Omna or any smart home camera that has night vision through IR LED’s. This means you can have a camera on the inside of you home, pointed outside into your backyard and have the camera monitor everything that goes on at night. For compatibility, the Lifx bulbs work with IFTTT, Alexa, Smart Things and Google Home. It doesn’t work with HomeKit which is odd since Lifx’s app is quite nice and they took the time to create an Apple watch app for it but decided NOT to go all the way with HomeKit integration. Now Apple has removed their hardware requirements for HomeKit devices in the middle of 2017 so I’m hoping the Lifx will be able to push an update for the bulbs that includes HomeKit compatibility. Until then, if you’re planning on going with Apple Home as your Smart Home Platform, don’t get a set of Lifx bulbs just yet. Unlike Smart Home Cameras, I recommend keeping the light bulbs within your chosen smart home platform? Why? Because light is something that you use a lot throughout a day and being able to verbalize your commands through Siri is going to be handy. Or use the Lifx lights in an Apple Home automation. But if you’re running Alexa or Google Home, knock yourself out.
