How do we perceive or express emotions in the other language(s)? Although emotions seem universal, they seem to be difficult to define and express across languages in an unambiguous way. Multilinguals use their languages for different discourse domains and they are not necessarily equally proficient in their various languages. Expressing emotions and reacting to specific situations can lead to misunderstandings and very interesting cross-cultural experiences. During this session, Prof. Jean-Marc Dewaele, who has done extensive research on this topic, will share with us important insights and he will answer our questions live. You are kindly invited you to join us in this discussion and to ask your questions live in the chat! Jean-Marc Dewaele is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism at Birkbeck, University of London. He has published widely on individual differences in psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic, psychological and emotional variables in Second Language Acquisition and Multilingualism. He is former president of the International Association of Multilingualism and the European Second Language Association and he is General Editor of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. He won the Equality and Diversity Research Award from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (2013) and the Robert Gardner Award for Excellence in Second Language and Bilingualism Research (2016) from the International Association of Language and Social Psychology.
