The Barbados Police Service has intensified its efforts to tackle the persistent issue of illegal and uninsured motorcycles on the island. Through the relaunch of Operation Road Assurance we want to send a clear message: unlawful activity on the roads will no longer be tolerated. Operation Road Assurance began in June 2023 as a targeted program to address the growing concern over illegal motorcycles, many suspected of being connected to criminal activity. The initiative was designed to remove uninsured and unlawfully operated motorcycles, as well as ATVs, from Barbados’ streets, promoting public safety and upholding traffic regulations. Although the program experienced periods of reduced activity due to resource constraints and other policing priorities, a renewed focus was established in September 2025. The relaunch was driven by intelligence-led analysis, allowing officers to identify peak times and locations for illegal motorcycle activity and optimize patrol deployments accordingly. Key Actions and Outcomes • Targeted Patrols: Regular operations conducted on specific days, based on intelligence about motorcycle movements. • Seizures: In September alone, 26 illegal motorcycles were confiscated. From January to October this year 69 motorcycles have been seized and several remain in police custody, and if not claimed legally, may be auctioned. • Legalization and Returns: Owners who provided appropriate documentation demonstrating legality and ownership have had 27 motorcycles returned. • Prosecutions: Since the program’s inception, more than 250 cases directly related to illegal motorcycles have been pursued. Ongoing Commitment This crackdown is a sustained campaign. The Barbados Police Service is determined to continue ridding the streets of illegal motorcycles and will maintain general road safety enforcement. Warning to Motorcyclists • If your motorcycle is not legal, take immediate steps to rectify the situation. • Failure to comply will result in seizure and possible forfeiture of your motorcycle. • The police will continue targeted actions against illegal motorcycles and ATVs as part of Operation Road Assurance. Operation Road Assurance demonstrates The Barbados Police Service’s unwavering commitment to public safety and the rule of law. By targeting illegal motorcycles, the initiative protects citizens and helps prevent unlawful activities linked to these vehicles. The message is clear: ride legally or risk losing your bike. The Barbados Police Service fully committed: “To Serve, Protect and Reassure”.
