Il commiato (The farewell), known by its refrain as Giovinezza (Youth) is a song that is part of the repertoire of the goliardic hymn of the Italian university, in vogue at the beginning of the twentieth century, an extemporaneous work by Nino Oxilia, who composed the verses on a convivial occasion in the 1909. Oxilia's text was set to music by Giuseppe Blanc. Originally widespread among the students of the University of Turin, the goliardic song celebrated the end of their studies and the imminent assumption of adult responsibilities, with the consequent loss of the sweetness of youth. Born as a nostalgic student song focused on the theme of the melancholy epilogue of the carefree university life, it suffered an unexpected fate over time, adopted, as it was, in various contexts that overwhelmed its original goliardic imprint: first adapted in a military key, then in political and social key, it ended up becoming Giovinezza, the triumphal anthem of the NFP.
