Interview with Peter Sandy, taken from the upcoming Save the Brumbies Documentary directed by Sonia Buckley. (c) 2020 SLB Productions IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SONIA BUCKLEY: Upon hearing of the plan by Parks Victoria to cull brumbies up on the high plains, I said to my son Tom Buckley - who is a 6th generation mountain cattleman and brumby runner from Benambra, “You better saddle up son, and go muster some brumbies!” Our family have owned and loved brumbies for generations, my grandfather Micky Mathews and my Uncle Fred Jarvis were also brumby breakers, and so we were not going to stand idle and quickly gathered a crack team of local riders. As Director of SLB Productions, and a passionate local, I decided it was time that we had an open and transparent discussion with the State Government and any others who cannot understand our love of these wild horses. We can be a mouthpiece for the High Country people, the ones who live and breathe these wild alpine ranges. Our crew of dedicated volunteers are filming a narrative documentary and need your support to champion the brumbies cause and discuss more effective land management. Unfortunately there has been some misinformation and confusion going around, which is not unusual given the emotional aspect of this situation. We wish to clarify that this project started with written permission from Ken Connley to film on the Bundarra property that he co-owns with Phil Maguire. All film and photographs that we have shared so far are exclusive to SLB Productions, and we have written permission from all actors, riders and those interviewed. This project was put together in a matter of days, so although we had tried to contact Phil Maguire so we could interview him, his team were already out of range, and they had successfully sighted a mob up top, so we wanted to assist with their efforts. We didn’t get to meet up with them but had some success as my son Tom, along with local brumby runners Craig Orchard, Peter Sandy, Christopher Connley and Josh Oatly pushed two mobs down from the spur. We will be releasing a trailer soon. We also hope to interview Phil, as many are grateful for his legal efforts and we certainly join in wishing him every success. It's imperative that all horse factions unite together, because the plight of the brumbies depends on it. There have been many negative comments and unsubstantiated claims made on social media - none of which do any justice to the cause. We face a David and Goliath battle against the State Government, and must unite if we are to have an impact. I ask all passionate horse loving people to keep positive, lobby politicians, and support each other. The Government needs to see that collectively we have the solutions that will help solve not only the brumby issue, but others that we face here in the bush. I hope you enjoy this first interview with Brumby runner and respected high country Cattleman Peter Sandy. Watch this space as there are more informative interviews to follow. Kindest Regards Sonia Buckley, Director, SLB Productions.
