9/1/2006 Giles uses pass to win in double OT Nathan Tanner tosses the winning conversion to best friend Andrew Fenstermaker. By Andee Sears andee.sears@roanoke.com BLACKSBURG - It's going to be a long season if Giles, led by Nathan Tanner, keeps hammering out wins like Friday's 22-21 double overtime season opener against Blacksburg. Tanner, a three year starter, moved inside to Giles 22 take over the Blacksburg Spartans' show21, 2 OT cased tailback position vacated by Ricky Cook. He ran for all three Giles touchdowns and put together a homemade pass on a busted play in the second overtime to pull off the winning two-point conversion. *Coach [Steve] Ragsdale told us before we went out on the field that we didn't come here to play for a tie," Tanner said. "He said we came here to win and we just had to suck it up." Tanner, a willowy 6-3 senior, cobbled together a 69-yard drive from his own 1-yard line that included a Bruins lost fumble on punt return to put the Spartans within field-goal range with 4 seconds in regulation. The teams traded timeouts before Giles place-kicker Cody Journell missed the 36-yard field goal attempt to send it into overtime. The Spartans immediately fumbled the ball away on first and goal at the 10 to Blacksburg's Jake Belote, ending the first overtime possession. The Spartans mustered a Since the mud-streaked 3-yard Tanner touchdown on tailback had already pounded of his three touchdowns in the Spartans double-overtime victory over the Bruins on Friday night. out 185 yards on 34 carries, a ground assault looked promising. Instead, Tanner swung out right, found Giles defenders waiting, slithered left across the rain slicked field, then saw his best friend, senior wingback Andrew Fenstermaker, hanging out at the back of the end zone. "I was just carrying out a fake and I saw him scrambling around," said Fenstermaker. "So I cut for the corner and just hoped he'd see me." Everyone in Bill Brown stadium saw him. The home crowd saw me catch the pass and then crumple, while Spartans fans erupted, cowbells ringing. Tanner’s 38-yard run and Cournell’s kick, followed by Holmes’ 47-yard run and Violette’s kick, and then Gresh’s run with another Violette kick, kept the energy high. Keys added a run for yet another Violette kick, and Tanner connected with Fenstermaker for a touchdown on the road in front of their Giles County homes. By the end, my nerves were shot,” Fenstermaker admitted. “You’re just playing as hard as you can and hoping for the best.” Tanner led Giles with 34 carries for 185 yards, Fenstermaker added 32 yards on 8 carries, and Freeman chipped in 14 yards. For Blacksburg, Keys had 47 rushing yards, while Holmes and Gresh fought hard on the ground. Passing stats showed Tanner going 2-for-7 with 46 yards, and Holmes completing one pass for 47 yards. In the end, it was pure grit on both sides.
