10/11/1985 Radford holds on, edges Blue Demons By RAY COX -The Roanoke Times RADFORD - Most of the elements for a great high school homecoming were in place at Radford High Friday night: a lovely Indian summer night, an award-winning band and crowds of appreciative alumni. Only one thing went wrong. Refusing to be sacrificial lambs, the guests from Christiansburg did everything they could to wreck the party and almost succeeded. Unbeaten Radford had to hang on by its fingernails for a 14-6 New River District victory. "They really showed us something," Bobcats quarterback Robert Lineburg said. "Coach (Roger) Davidson had them prepared, and they came to play." Not until Radford's Johnny Franklin picked off Mike Wilson's pass at the Bobcats' 8 with 30 seconds left was the victory preserved. The biggest play of the game may have come earlier, though. Clinging to a 7-6 lead that had stood since 8:56 of the second quarter, Radford (3-0-1, 4-0-2) faced a fourth-and-two from its 33 with a little more than four minutes to play. A good punt was essential, but Radford's regular punter, Junior Thompson, had sat out the last two kicks with a sore ankle. He came out anyway, fielded a bad snap, and boomed a 54-yarder to the Demons' 13. "It was a high snap, and I had to get it away quick," Thompson said. "It felt pretty good, though." Not for the Blue Demons, who had 77 yards to cover. Christiansburg (0-3, 1-6) managed only 3 yards in three plays as two Wilson passes were swatted down by Bobcats lineman Tim Strand, who said he never saw the ball. The subsequent punt gave Radford the ball on the Blue Demons' 48. It was the first time Radford had crossed midfield in the second half. After the Bobcats gained a first down - their second of the half and seventh of the game - London Turner broke a simple off-tackle play for 37 yards and his second touchdown of the game. "That gave us a little breathing room there," Radford coach Norman Lineburg said. "We used a formation that we hadn't used and moved a wingback out to that (left) side. The linebacker and the end moved out there with him and left a hole." When Christiansburg took over, it had no timeouts left and a little more than minute to score. Wilson completed three straight passes for 39 yards before a sack and Franklin's interception settled matters. "I think Radford knows they've been in a football game," Blue Demons coach Roger Davidson said. "These guys came down here to win, and I'm as proud of them as I can be." The Blue Demons befuddled everybody by turning to a rushingbased offense for a change. That strategy resulted in 133 overland yards and 15 first downs. The bulk of it was provided by Todd Miller, who had 29 carries for 100 yards - his best night of the year. "All week we prepared for them to air it out," Robert Lineburg said. "We were expecting them to zing that thing all over the place. When they came out in that power-1, it really shocked us." Christiansburg's lone score came via the pass, however. Wilson found a streaking Steve Campbell open for 38-yard scoring strike with left in the first quarter. A two- point run failed, and that made it 6-0. Radford came back in the second quarter with a 65-yard drive capped by a 1-yard Turner plunge. The junior tailback eventually finished with 98 yards in 16 carries. Afterward, Norman Lineburg was clearly relieved that it was over. "Christiansburg was as well-prepared as anybody we played this year," he said. 'You really have to give them credit. The had an excellent game plan."
