I finally got around to painting the outside and what a transformation! The renovation in summer has been a real challenge but worth it. Glad to be chipping away slowly my DIY projects. Painting the outside was at the top of my list. A coat of paint was well overdue for both 1) longevity of the building and 2) an image transformation. 1) Longevity. Painting the house gives a new layer of protection to the skin of the house. It will also help to repel the weather. On top of this, it has given me the opportunity to inspect the house for any issues - it’s like when I buy a second hand car and the first car wash really reveals the paint and body condition. I’m happy to report there are no issues beyond adjusting a few gutters. 2) Image transformation. I’ve been excited to paint the outside of the house and change the look. I put quite a lot of time in walking around neighbourhoods and checking which colors works since owning the house. I was happy to find something that feels right for now. I was also glad to hear my neighbors complements! ————————— FAQs 1. Why no undercoat on the walls? For my home, after consulting with the paint specialists, I learned that i didnt need an undercoat. The paint includes an undercoat element and it did great! It is a good product. 2. Why oil based undercoat on the eaves? The eaves are metal and were peeling/flaking. Oil based paint helps to prime the bare areas and block stains. I first needed to scrape and clean some areas. 3. Why one coat on the walls? I only had time for one coat and it covered great and I was careful to avoid misses. I will do another coat in the near future. 4. How much did it cost for paint? Less than 80,000 yen for all exterior paint. 5. How long did it take to paint everything in the video? About 14 days total. 6. Did I need permission to paint/change color? No. Although, it would be a different story for a national park.
