The University of Hawaiʻi football team resumed spring training Monday morning after Saturday’s rainstorm washed out practice — and it marked a notable return taking snaps. Sophomore quarterback Micah Alejado, the reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Year, took part in quarterback drills for the first time this spring as he continues to recover from an ankle injury he suffered — and played through — last season. “Feels good,” Alejado said. “I think the plan that we’ve had and just getting back out there again and doing all these extra things on the side to get it ready, I think it’s going well. It feels a lot better right now, so I was happy to be back out there.” Monday’s session provided a key benchmark in Alejado’s recovery process, allowing him to participate in drills alongside fellow quarterbacks while continuing to ease back into full activity. “It’s hard to stay out of the past. I love it,” Alejado said. “There’s only been about two months since our last game, so I know it isn’t back yet, but I just want to make sure I was good enough to go first and then slowly work my way back this time around. The main goal is to get it back 100 percent. The process is looking good, and staying committed to the process is the biggest thing.” Alejado said patience has been central to his recovery — especially after missing time late last season — and emphasized the importance of returning to full health for both the upcoming season and his long-term future. “My patience was tested when I sat out the third and fourth week last year,” he said. “I understand that I’ve got to get it back healthy if I want any shot at this season or in the future.” During his recovery, Alejado has also taken on a mentorship role with younger quarterbacks, including true freshman Maika Eugenio and second-semester freshman Bjorn Jurgensen. “Taking a step back and helping coach them up on the side has been important for them,” Alejado said. “It helps me grow as a person, too.” Hawaii News, Hawaii Weather, Hawaii Sports See more of the team that is Working for Hawaii on our website: https://www.khon2.com Stay informed about Hawaii news, weather, sports and entertainment, subscribe to the KHON2 YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/KHONNews...
