Title: লেজঝোলা পাখি হাঁড়িচাচা (Rufous Treepie) | Bangladeshi Birds Documentary | Bird Sounds & Facts We all know this childhood rhyme, “Aye Re Pakhi Lejjhola,” where a mother is pleading to the long-tailed bird to entertain or lull her child to sleep. That “long-tailed bird” is actually the Treepie. There are two species of treepie in Bangladesh. One is the Rufous Treepie, and the other is the Grey Treepie. The first is a common resident bird in Bangladesh, found all over the country. The second one, the Grey Treepie, is a rare resident bird and is very rarely seen. The treepie, or Rufous Treepie, is a long-tailed bird of the crow family. It looks like the common crow. This bird is also known as Taura, Tare, Lej-jhola, Dheki-lyaja, and Kutum Pakhi in different regions of Bangladesh. The Rufous Treepie is a long-tailed bird of the genus Dendrocitta that belongs to the Corvidae family. The scientific name of the Commonly known as Rufous Treepie is Dendrocitta vagabunda. So far, a total of nine subspecies of this bird have been identified. The Rufous Treepie is found all over the country, including Dhaka. It usually lives in tree-covered regions, forest edges, roadside trees in villages, and even in city parks. Interestingly, cuckoos lay their eggs in the treepie’s nest whenever they get the chance. The treepies feed and raise the cuckoo chicks. The underside of their body is brown. Their back is reddish. The head, back of the neck, and breast are dark grey. Their body is olive-brown. The tip of the tail is black, and the upper side is ash-grey. The wing feathers are black and ash-colored. The eyes are orange-brown. The beak is dark grey. The legs and feet are blackish-brown. Patches of white feathers can be seen from the base to the tip of the wings. Male and female birds look alike. The Rufous Treepie is an omnivorous bird. They feed on ripe fruits, flower nectar, invertebrates, frogs, various insects, and pests. They breed together year after year. March-July is their breeding season. Both male and female build nests with twigs, bamboo splinters, and dry leaves, and lay 4 to 5 eggs. The eggs are of different colors. The chicks hatch in 17 to 19 days. Both parents take care of feeding the chicks. Their population has remained unchanged over the past few decades. Therefore, the IUCN has classified this species as Least Concern. This species is protected under the Bangladesh Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012.
