Their primary food is fish; hence, the word “fish” is associated with their name. There are 12 species of kingfishers found in our country. The Pied Kingfisher is one of them. They can be easily distinguished from other kingfishers by their black and white color. The scientific name of the commonly known Pied Kingfisher is Ceryle rudis. Regionally, the Pied Kingfisher is also known as the Shadakalo Machranga (Black and White Kingfisher), Dorakata Machranga (Striped Kingfisher), or Chhite Machranga (Speckled Kingfisher). The Pied Kingfisher is a unique piscivorous bird. They display remarkable solitude and patience while fishing. They silently perch on tree branches or on bamboo poles planted in ponds. This solitude is its sole strategy for catching prey. The entire process is both fascinating and artistic to watch. From a height of about four meters, it dives into the water at the speed of an arrow shot from a bow. With its long, sharp beak, it grips the prey and rises back above the water. From catching the prey to feeding it, every step is done with great precision. An adult Pied Kingfisher is about 25–31 cm in length. Its entire body is marked with black and white stripes. The nape, throat, breast, belly, and the underside of the wings (primaries) are cotton-white. The beak, legs, feet, and claws are grayish-black in color. The eyes are black, with a long white eyebrow line. At the back of the head, there is a small white-black crest. Although the breeding season is February-April, it can breed throughout the year. The bird shows great intelligence in selecting its nesting site. As the entrance of the burrow is very small and the nest chamber is quite deep, carnivorous animals or predatory birds cannot enter to damage the eggs or chicks. The female lays 5–6 glossy white eggs at the far end of the burrow. The eggs hatch in 19–22 days. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks. The chicks learn to fly within 13–16 days. Fish is their main food, but when fish are scarce, they also feed on worms, tadpoles, young crabs, and various aquatic insects. According to the IUCN Red List, the species is classified as Least Concern. The Pied Kingfisher not only adds beauty to nature but also helps maintain ecological balance.
