Square Knot, Level Up. Old Great Knot. New Power.

The Reef Knot (or Square Knot, ABoK #74) is old, simple and famous. But what if you want it stronger? In this video I show three knots: 1. Classic Square Knot First, I tie a normal Reef Knot to join two ropes in a clean, “sea” style. This is our start point. 2. Square Knot – OVER version Then I tie the first modified Square Knot. In this knot the working end of one rope goes over the standing part. The other rope stays like in the classic Square Knot. This small change gives more friction and a stronger join. 3. Square Knot – UNDER version After that I tie the second modified Square Knot. Here the working end of one rope goes under the standing part. Again, the other rope stays like in the classic Reef Knot. This version gives even more grip. The standing part presses the working end and helps stop slipping. These two rare versions are sometimes called the “Academic Knot”. They come from A. N. Kuryashkin (Kazakhstan), “Knot Tying Technique. Theory and Practice”, drawings 812 and 813. You can use these stronger Square Knots for: • camping and hiking • industrial and rope access work (with training) • arborist and tree work • everyday rope jobs and hauling ⚠️ Safety tip: Always test your knot, leave longer tails and add a backup knot if needed. A strong knot is good, but smart use is even better.
