Prizewinning Finalist, May 2022 Margaret of the Isles Scottish Harp Competition PROGRAM NOTES: 1. Catriona’s Jig, Maeve Gilchrist: This tune was written by renowned Scottish harp player, Maeve Gilchrist. She wrote the tune for her cousin, Catriona’s wedding in 2015. The tune embodies the mischief the two would get into while attending the Edinburgh Harp Festival together. 2. Set from the Patrick McDonald Collection, Arr. Morgan Mackenzie Short: 1:36 This is a set of three tunes from the Patrick McDonald Collection. Màraidh bhàn òg (Mary Young and Fair) is a famous Scottish Gaelic air having the character of the ancient harper's repertoire. The second tune My Love is Fixed on Donald, is traditionally a piper’s tune. Patrick states that this tune is “sung by the natives in a wild, artless and irregular manner.” I chose to use only the first two measures of the theme. The rest of the tune is my own original material which celebrates the Scottish Highlands. The last tune of the set is known as No. 58. We know little of this tune’s origins. 3. Jamie Come Try Me, Robert Burns: 7:28 Arr. by Kim Robertson Regarded worldwide as the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns wrote the poem Jamie Come Try Me set to the melody of an old air that was first published in the Oswald’s Curious Scots Tunes in 1742. The theme of this tune is love that never gives up. 4. Ghosts of Gight, Bert Murray: 11:26 Arr. by Kim Robertson Built in 1479, by the Gordon family, Gight Castle was the ancestral home for the famous poet, Lord Byron. All there is left of Gight Castle today are ruins after the sudden, unexplained deaths of three men after the 13th Century Scottish Lord, Thomas the Rhymer prophesized that, “At Gight three men by sudden death shall dee, And after that the land shall lie in lea.” Legend has it that Gight Castle is haunted by many ghosts. 5. The Gathering, Morgan Mackenzie Short: 15:04 I began writing this tune in December 2021. This tune is a dedication and a tribute to the lives of two Scottish heroes whose lives have impacted the world. They are, Eric Liddell and Mary Slessor. Both are known for their strength of character, who stood firmly for what they believed no matter the cost, and were determined to run their race for all people. My composition is in five sections connected by a sense of running towards a goal. 6. Sunrise over River Cottage/Briana’s Song, Morgan Mackenzie Short: 23:52 I began writing this tune in March 2022 as an opener for a set of tunes I am writing as a tribute to my home. Although recent world events, have reshaped my understanding of what home is. Therefore, I have rededicated this tune to Briana who was born in March 2022 in Kiev, Ukraine. Let this melody remind us that even though night has fallen, joy comes in the morning.
