During the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este I filmed this 1970 Monteverdi Hai 450 GTS. The Monteverdi Hai was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970 and is perhaps the best-known creation by the highly exclusive Swiss car manufacturer from Basel. The automaker was founded by Peter Monteverdi and produced luxury saloons, coupés, convertibles and even SUVs in very small numbers from 1967 until 1982. Similar to the likes of De Tomaso and Jensen, Monteverdi as a European low-volume manufacturer combined proven and robust American drivetrain and engine technology with exclusive handcrafted bodies touched by the allure of Italian design. Only two versions of the sports car were produced between 1970 and 1973: Hai 450 SS and Hai 450 GTS. The technology and dimensions of these two cars differed very slightly. Three years after the Hai 450 SS was launched, Monteverdi presented a refined version of the mid-engined sports car in 1973 bearing the designation Hai 450 GTS. Its main distinguishing feature was the wheelbase, which was extended by 50 mm in order to increase the space available in the cabin. The Chrysler eight-cylinder engine was provided with a displacement of 7 litres to develop around 390 hp, reach a top speed of 280 km/h (175 mph) and accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h (62.5 mph) in 5.5 seconds during a contemporaneous test carried out by German automotive magazine ‘Auto Zeitung’. The Hai was about one third more expensive than a Lamborghini Countach, which certainly did nothing to promote its popularity with the motoring public. Fissore in Italy crafted a body design for the Hai similar to that of the Renault Alpine A110. Only one of the cars was sold to a German customer and the other cars remained in Monteverdi’s ownership. The car presented here spent virtually all its life at the Monteverdi Museum in Binningen. After the museum closed its doors for the final time, it was sold to its present owner in 2019. Amazingly, the odometer still reads no more than 500 kilometres from new.
