South Australia’s cosmopolitan coastal capital Adelaide has a ring of parkland on the River Torrens. The city's Adelaide Festival is an annual international arts gathering with spin-offs including fringe and film events. A gentle walk across the parks from North Terrace, near the station, past the Convention Centre and Festival Center, leads you to the Adelaide Oval with its statue of Sir Donald George Bradman. Nicknamed "The Don", the Australian international cricketer, was widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. His Test batting average was 99.94 and if he had made only 4 runs in his final batting performance his average would have been 100. He was dismissed for zero and walked off to a standing ovation! A little further on lies the landmark St Peter's Cathedral an important part of the city’s heritage. However, the Cathedral is much more than a beautiful historic building. It is also the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide and home to a dynamic and inclusive community, which cherishes excellent liturgy, and a fine music tradition, much like our own at St Peter's Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton. After Eucharist we strolled back along North Terrace past the University, Art Gallery, the Museum and the Parliament of South Australia buildings to our hotel, The Playford with its fine Art Nouveau styling reflecting the style and grace of the artistic movement that started in Europe around 1890 and lasted until 1910.
