Hidden in the modern history of Vasquez Rocks is the story of a vanished industrial town — a borax mining operation that rose fast, built a community in Tick Canyon, and disappeared within a generation. In Part 3 of this six-part series, Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park Superintendent Sarah Brewer, one of the leading authorities on the site’s cultural and natural history, traces the rise and collapse of the Sterling Borax Mine — one of the most significant early industrial ventures in the Santa Clarita Valley. Within just a few years, falling prices and depleted deposits brought the entire operation to an abrupt end. The story connects directly to larger California history. Transportation networks built by figures like Remi Nadeau and Edward F. Beale made extraction possible, while the discovery of colemanite placed Tick Canyon within the broader post–Gold Rush mineral economy. Today, little remains beyond foundations, tailings, and faint traces in the landscape — the physical footprint of a town and industry most visitors to Vasquez Rocks never realize existed.
