The village of Walsingham is steeped in history with Saxon origins and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Known as 'England's Nazareth' the village has a long history of religious pilgrimage. In 1061 Lady Richeldis de Faverches had a vision of the Virgin Mary. She requested that a replica of the Holy House at Nazareth be built in Walsingham. The Holy House is a replica of the house in Nazareth in which Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Jesus. Lady Richeldis gave instructions for workmen to build the replica wooden Holy House near two wells but when they ran into difficulties with construction she spent all night in prayer. When the workmen returned the following morning they were left shocked and amazed to discover the Holy House had been miraculously built 200 feet from its original foundations. It was presumed this was the work of angels. Walsingham Priory became one of Europe's great pilgrim destinations in the Middle Ages until the destruction of the priory by Henry VIII in 1538. In this era Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and disbanded their monasteries. Assets were sold, Henry acquired more wealth and set up the Church of England. Acting in accordance with the dissolution of the monasteries the shrine was dismantled and priory destroyed. The site was sold by order of Henry VIII to Mr Thomas Sidney for 90 pounds, and a private mansion was erected. The stunning twin turreted arch (which previously held the east window) is sadly all that remains of the priory church. The medieval crypt is the only surviving room of Walsingham Priory. The Abbey Grounds provide a spectacular snowdrop display throughout the month of February and Walsingham still attracts many visitors with a replica of the original Holy House recreated by Father Hope Patten in 1922. The restored Holy House is located in Little Walsingham and is called the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. A relic of the True Cross is also located here. Today around 250,000 pilgrims from all over the world still visit Walsingham each year.
